TRASH COLLECTION

Per Borough ordinance trash must be placed curbside before 6 a.m. Tuesday morning to insure collection. TRASH is collected in the Borough for residence and apartment buildings, up to and including 3 units only, every Tuesday at the curb. Trash must be bagged and placed in a proper metal or plastic container.

Bulk items are collected the last Tuesday of each month.  Samples include chair, sofa, lamp, mattress and box spring, washer or dryer.  Limit one item per residence. Items must be placed curbside prior to 6 a.m. on Tuesdays.

 Residents must contact Allied Waste (610) 869-2222 to make arrangements for the collection of any appliances containing Freon.   Cost for this service is the sole responsibility of the resident.

UNACCEPTABLE MATERIALS  

Items containing Freon, motor oil, gasoline, and anti-freeze, tires, construction material, and all Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).

RECYCLING - SINGLE STREAM PROGRAM

The Borough's recycling is picked up every Tuesday, the same day as trash collection. . Per Borough ordinance recyclables must be place curbside before 6 a.m. to insure collection.

Under Pennsylvania Act 101, recycling is mandatory in the Borough of Kennett Square-this includes all properties; residential, commercial, industrial and public.

Through the Borough's Residential Recycling Contractor, Allied Waste, the following items are collected:

Newspapers, Inserts, Junk Mail, Magazines, Catalogs, Envelopes, Paper Back Books, Phone Books, Office and School Papers, and Colored Paper.

Cardboard, Boxboard, Clean Pizza Boxes (must be flattened), Paper Egg Cartons and Paper Bags (grocery type).

Aluminum Cans, Clean Foil, Tin and Steel Aerosol Cans (empty and rinsed).

Clear, Green and Brown Glass Bottles and Jars (empty and rinsed).

All Plastic Containers Labeled #1 through #7 (emptied and rinsed).

PLEASE NOTE: Allied Waste now offers Single Stream Recycling which means that all recyclable materials can now be placed in one container.

For the convenience of Borough residents, there is a recycling receptacle located in the rear of the parking lot of 604 Terminal Way.  This receptacle is available 7 days a week and if for corrugated cardboard ONLYThe cardboard disposed of there, must be flattened and inserted into the slot of the receptacle.

LEAVES and BRUSH

Grass clippings and leaf collection will take place on Mondays from May 1st through December 31st.  Please do not place or direct grass, leaves or any other litter into the street.  It is a violation of the Borough Code 13-3.

Grass clippings and leaves are to be put in brown paper "Earth Bags", and must be folded over, no tape of any kind will be accepted. They are to be placed curbside by 7 a.m. Monday. *THE BAGS ARE COLLECTED BY THE BOROUGH ON MONDAYS ONLY AND ARE NOT TO EXCEED 20 POUNDS.  Bags can be purchased at Borough Hall for $.50 each at 120 Marshall Street, from 8:30 - 4:30 pm.

Limbs and branches are to be placed curbside, parallel to the street, with cut ends facing the same direction by 7 a.m. Monday.* LIMBS AND BRANCHES ARE COLLECTED BY THE BOROUGH ON  THE FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH. Limbs and branches are no longer required to be bundled. The Borough reserves the right to refuse the collection of excessive quantities, sizes or bamboo.

WE ASK THAT YOU CALL NO LATER THAN THE FRIDAY BEFORE TO INFORM US THAT YOU HAVE LEAVES  AND/OR LIMBS TO BE PICKED UP.

Can I burn my leaves and trash? No, open burning is not permitted within the Borough limits.

Old Appliances and Furniture Old appliances and furniture are picked up at the curb one day a month (the last Tuesday of each month.) Limit one piece per residence. Refrigerators must have the doors removed and any appliances which use a coolant gas (refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners) must have the refrigerant removed by a certified technician and a tag certifying that this has been done must be attached to the unit. Residents must call Allied Waste (610) 869-2222 to make pick-up arrangements once the Freon is properly removed.  Items must be placed curbside prior to 6 a.m. on Tuesdays.


CHRISTMAS TREES

Christmas trees should be placed at the curb where they will be picked up by the Public Works Department and recycled.

STREET SWEEPING

Street sweeping of State, E. Linden & N. Willow streets occurs every Friday between the hours of 2:00 A.M. and 5:00 A.M. On-Street parking is prohibited during these hours.

SNOW REMOVAL

Shovel sidewalks and driveways as per Kennett Square Borough Municipal Code which states “…within the first six hours after daylight after a fall of snow or hail remove such snow or hail from the sidewalks…”.

Please do not blow, shovel, place or throw snow into the roadways.

Where possible, please do not park on the roadway.

Public Works policy calls for de-icing agents under 2” of snow and to begin plowing when 2” or more has accumulated.

Major access roads receive first attention in snow and ice removal.  The order is as follows:

1.  Cypress Street, State Street, Route 82, Union Street, Broad Street and then all other designated Snow Emergency Route *(see below) roadways.

2.  Streets and Avenues.

3.  Alleys

4.  Parking lots and Parking Garage

Vehicle parked on the streets designated in the Snow Emergencies Route will need to be removed during snow emergencies.  A snow emergency is normally issued when 4” or more of snow has accumulated.

The Borough plows from curb to curb for facilitating postal deliveries and to allow enough room for parking and safe passage of vehicles.

1. Birch Street, north side;

2. West Cedar Street, both sides; between Meredith Street and Union Street;

3. Cypress Street, both sides;

4. Meredith Street, west side; between State Street and Cedar Street;

5. Race Street, between East State Street and East Cypress Street;

6. South Street, south side;

7. State Street, both sides;          

8. Union Street, both sides;

9. Walnut Street, east side;

10. East Linden Street, south side; between Union Street and Willow Street;

11. Broad Street, both sides; between East State and East Cypress Streets.
